A short circuit from a layby on the B2116 below Blackcap, up a sunken chalk track to open downland with views over the valleys and back through woodland. It does not start at a pub or a station: the National Trust points to the Half Moon in nearby Plumpton, which is off the route. The source gives miles, with km in brackets.
The ground
Chalk paths that may be slippery when wet, uneven ground, and sections muddy in winter. Sunken chalk tracks (bostals), open downland and woodland.
Livestock
Sheep and Sussex cattle graze the area; the ground is uneven where animals have been grazing.
The line on the map
The start is the National Trust grid reference converted approximately, and the woodland loop through Ashcombe Bottom is routed on the nearest tracks.
The route is from National Trust: read it at the source before you go (undated). The line on the map is drawn by Lewes Dogs on OpenStreetMap data (ODbL). With a dog? Lewes Dogs has this walk, with the rules and the livestock.
