One way, from Falmer station over the Downs into Lewes: through Stanmer village, up onto the South Downs Way, along to Black Cap, then down past the old racecourse and Lewes Castle to the station. Take the train out to Falmer and walk home.

The ground

Rated moderate by the source, which says it is unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. It climbs 163 m and descends 220 m, with 210 m the highest point. The source notes a gate and a fence line on the way up from Stanmer, and a choice above Stanmer between the direct way and a longer one to meet the South Downs Way; the line here takes the South Downs Way.

The line on the map

Drawn through the source's own eleven grid references (each good to 100 m), in its order. Drawn on the nearest paths, the line measures about 15 km against the source's 12.8 km, so treat the source's figure as the walk's length and the line as a guide to where it goes.

The route is from Car Free Walks (walk 235, "Falmer to Lewes", by GaryShipp): read it at the source before you go (created 8 September 2008, no update date shown, read 7 November 2026). The line on the map is drawn by What's On Lewes on OpenStreetMap data (ODbL), and nobody from the site has walked it yet.
