A loop from Lewes station through Cliffe past Harvey's Brewery, north along the Ouse to the railway bridge, up through woods to Offham and a steep path to the chalk pits viewpoint, then back over the old racecourse, Landport Bottom (the site of the 1264 Battle of Lewes) and Spital Road into town. It links with the Cooksbridge loop. The leaflet gives miles, with km in brackets.

The ground

Uneven, sometimes muddy. A steep climb to the Offham chalk pits, and some steep streets in Lewes (School Hill). Riverside path along the Ouse; take care crossing roads (the route briefly follows the A275 at Offham and crosses the main road onto Spital Road).

General advice only: keep dogs on a lead around livestock and wildlife.

The line on the map

The return over the old racecourse, Jill's Pond and Landport Bottom is routed on the nearest bridleways.

The route is from South Downs National Park Authority: read it at the source before you go (August 2024 (leaflet imprint)). The line on the map is drawn by Lewes Dogs on OpenStreetMap data (ODbL). With a dog? Lewes Dogs has this walk, with the rules and the livestock.
