One way, from Ringmer back into Lewes: south from the war memorial to the Glynde road, up onto Cliffe Hill with the South Downs all round, then down the road into Cliffe and over the Ouse to the bus station. Take the bus out (the 28 runs from Lewes to Ringmer, among others) and walk home.
The ground
A short, steep climb, then a long, gradual one onto Cliffe Hill (140 m at the top), and a steep descent by road into Cliffe. Above the golf course the route takes the left fork, which avoids a stile and the golf course, on permissive tracks that soon join a right of way. The source calls it unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
The line on the map
Drawn through the source's own four grid references (each good to 100 m), with Chapel Hill and Cliffe Bridge added for the descent it describes; the paths between are the router's. The source gives 4.7 km, measured straight from point to point; along the paths it comes to about 6 km.
The route is from Car Free Walks (walk 446, "Ringmer - Saxon Cross - Lewes", by mickkohn): read it at the source before you go (published 5 October 2010, read 6 November 2026). The line on the map is drawn by What's On Lewes on OpenStreetMap data (ODbL), and nobody from the site has walked it yet.
