Starts
Cockshut Road gate, Lewes
Time
About half an hour, by our reckoning

A short circuit of the Cockshut wet meadow from the Cockshut Road gate, on Lewes footpath 4 and the paths mapped around the restoration, then back to the same gate. About 1.4 km there and back. The project says it is a 15-minute walk from Lewes station, with parking at Cockshut Road car park, BN7 1LW. The distance is the length of our line, not a figure the project publishes.

The ground

Flat. The project says the paths are not surfaced, can be muddy, and may not always be open, with raised walkways and footbridges. There are no facilities on the site. The west side of this circuit is a grass path of about 120 metres on the map, between the south path and the western footbridge.

Livestock

The project's Instagram on 1 Oct 2026 said sheep were conservation-grazing the Cockshut this autumn, and asked for dogs on leads while they are there.

The line on the map

Our own circuit of the wet meadow: Lewes footpath 4 from the Cockshut Road gate, along the stream to the western footbridge, a mapped grass path of about 120 m to the south path, back over the eastern footbridge, and out the same way. The desire line mapped as a mark on the grass is not used. Not paced out on the ground. 1.37 km, shown as 1.4.

The route is from Lewes Dogs. The rules are the Cockshut Stream Restoration Project's: read it at the source before you go (Rules read 6 Oct 2026 from the project's visiting page. Sheep note from its Instagram, 1 Oct 2026. The line is OpenStreetMap paths, read 6 Oct 2026.). The line on the map is drawn by Lewes Dogs on OpenStreetMap data (ODbL). With a dog? Lewes Dogs has this walk, with the rules and the livestock.
