Our own short loop from Bishopstone station to the ruins of Tide Mills, a village that grew up round a tide mill finished in 1788. The mill closed in 1883; the village was condemned in 1936 and its last families moved out in 1939, and the shingle was used for training in the war. Walk out along the beach towards Newhaven's harbour arm, back through the ruins and along the path beside the railway. Bishopstone is on the line from Lewes to Seaford.
The ground
Flat: the shingle of the beach, then a track and path back beside the railway (as OpenStreetMap maps them). The beach shelves steeply and the tide runs along the shore. Ground in the ruins is rough and hasn't been checked on the ground.
Livestock
None expected on the beach or the track.
The line on the map
Our own loop: out along the shingle from Bishopstone to the harbour end of the beach, back through the ruins and along the path beside the railway. Not paced out on the ground.
The route is from Lewes Dogs. The history is from Wikipedia's Tide Mills article: read it at the source before you go (History read 27 Oct 2026; dog rules from our beaches research (Seaford's byelaw, read 3-5 Oct 2026). The line from OpenStreetMap, read 27 Oct 2026.). The line on the map is drawn by Lewes Dogs on OpenStreetMap data (ODbL). With a dog? Lewes Dogs has this walk, with the rules and the livestock.
